She Was Made To Blow You Away, She Don't Care What Any Man Say

Do you spend a lot of money on clothes?

I don't. For me, the cheaper the better. And I'm not ashamed of it.

That's right. You heard me. I BUY CHEAP CLOTHES. Woo!

There's a few people I know who would faint after reading that sentence. Sorry, guys. But I don't get it. I understand that you want quality stuff, so you pay more for it... but some people buy expensive things just to say they did. Random high-end names that might not even be that well-made, but hey - it's all about the name, right?

Screw that. Buying non-expensive things mean I can get more for less. (Yeah, it's not rocket surgery... I know this.) Add that to the fact that I'm really talented when it comes to being broke, and I rarely buy things as it is? Yeah. Cheap is the way to go.

I'll never understand why people brag about the exorbitant amounts of money they spent on a purse. I'd rather brag about my savvy skills 'o saving cash (read: low-maintenance life).

It makes me laugh when I have conversations like this:

"Cute shoes, Kris! Where'd you get 'em?"

"Thanks! Target. $6. No shit!"

"..... oh" Make a face. Walk away.

or

"I really like your shirt, Kris. Where'd you get it?"

"Walmart. I got two of 'em cuz they fit so well."

Judgy, judgy facial expressions. So much WalMart hate.

It's ok, though. You can judge me, I don't mind.

I'm proud of it.

And, hell - let's say you and I both had $200 to spend on a sweater. I find one for $15. You have to get the  fancy-named one. You end up with $0 left.

I still have $185 for beer and poutine.

I win.

I once bought a pair of $100 jeans to see what the fuss was about and they ripped on day 2. Brought them back for a refund and went to a cheapo store and bought 4 pairs. Win indeed!

Well, now I just love you. Could you get any more awesome?!

I, too, buy cheap clothes - my mom and I make trips to consignment stores whenever we get together. I remember a coworker who complained because the HR people had a problem with her wearing jeans to work (in an office setting where office attire was mandatory) "What do they know? These jeans are worth over $100!" And I'm thinking "who the eff spends $100 on a pair of JEANS?!" 'course I didn't have the balls to say that to her face.

And Poutine. is. where. it's. at.

p.s. Love the new banner!!

Krista - I did the same thing! I bought expensive jeans ONCE ever... and my cheap-o ones have lasted years longer. Those ones stretched right away. Never again.

phx (Ohh, two Kristas!) - It's sad that people put so much stock into expensive things. It has always bugged me. My mom brought me up to be a smart shopper, and it's the one thing that has always stuck with me. And YOU, my dear, are the awesome one. Head East a bit and let's go for some poutine! :)

Agree w ur post but it's also all relative in some ways, non. The more you make, the more you'll likely spend, right? Because you 'can'. However, if that's the case I think one should also put some thought into it. I don't look at it as being cheap, it's being smart with your money. Smart is your Moms for instilling that in you, and smart for you to take heed. If you can get more mileage out of something going for a fraction of the price of a "branded" item - I say do it - but in my experience that is rarely the case. Remember that the old adage about 'getting what u pay for' rings true more often than not (been there done that). Mind you there is some expensive 'branded' shit out there that is just that, shit. In any case if you're gonna drop serious coin (or non-coin) on something my first instinct would be to ask you - did u do your homework on the item(s) and are you getting good bang for your buck (e.g. let's say I gotta buy some biz suits. I can go to Moore's and buy them at half of what they would cost at Harry Rosen - however the Moores stuff is gonna wear out fast and I'll end up replacing them soon and in the end it'll cost me the same if not more in $$ & time. Plus they're not gonna be as comfortable)

Now, there are also those that spend extra just to 'say' they can. That's bullshit. Personally I get embarrassed when someone flaunts it. Also when someone expects you to pony up b/c they think you can. Picking up the tab, etc... for friends/family is one thing (esp so they don't feel left out and because really, it makes me happy to treat them if I can. I work to live and so what if I decide to take care of them once in a while - I trust they'd do the same for me as well if/when they could) but being expected to do so just because you 'can' is another. Sorry a little off tangent there - am I rambling? - running on fumes here ;0

Won't waste anymore of your bandwidth tonight - the twit (ya I'm back on it but just for this w/e) announced you had a new blog entry, so naturally had to take a look and make a comment - your topics are always so thought provoking and they're fun to comment on.

So, that's enough for now, excuse me while I try to get a certain Def Leppard song out of my head (you know the one) and hit the hay to catch some zzzz's - got a long, long day ahead, in more ways than one :)

PS: Poutine and beer rock - oh do they rock. Why don't they make a musical about that?

one more thing - speaking of box - I see this sign in NYC everytime I go there and it always cracks me up...

In general I buy really cheap stuff too. Winners is my favourite store. But I also have a vintage clothing addiction so although I can find stuff cheap, sometimes, only sometimes I'll blow a ton on one really special piece I just have to have. (It's usually some hideously tacky 60's/70's rock star looking thing, I have pretty bad taste at times!)

Kris said...

SuperDuperKeith - In some cases you definitely "get what you pay for", especially with men's clothes. But a lot of chick clothes are different. Sometimes the quality is no different. For GOOD pieces, yes... it's a good idea to spend a little more if you know it'll last, and you'll get use out of it. I guess I'm more referring to the people who will over-spend on purpose, wear the thing once, and be done with it. My Mom taught me well - and I do research stuff to see what'll be my best bet.

I'm gonna go write a musical about poutine and beer. I'm sure I've already done it, in my head. Good luck today!

Gage - It's good to splurge on special pieces. I love vintage stores, you never know what you'll find. I have found amazing things, but they''re rarely my size :( Winners is good too, but my problem is that I don't really like to shop... so I have to be in the right mood to search through the racks.

True, you did. Which, in turn, makes you smart. Shazam!

The low maintenance thing is good for your future boyfriends. They're lucky. It can be crazy how high maintenance some women can be, everything has to be expensive or they ditch you. You're a catch Miss Kris!

no one has ever been able to explain poutine to me. ive asked all my canadians.

Kris said...

Anon - Shucks. Thanks. :)

ghost - They have it in the States now... But you hafta have it done right. Fries. Delicious Gravy. Fresh, squeaky cheese curds. I always get extra curds.

I'm telling ya - you'll love it.

I personally prefer a woman who has fake hair, fake nails, fake tan, adorable $600 shoes, overpriced dress, entitled attitude towards me, and a prick father.

Ahhh, just like paradise. (puke)

Next time I'm back in Toronto we are going to go for poutine! :) And making up a song about poutine and beer reminds me of a song that's already out there. You could go all Weird Al on it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ylRplLnU84

Kris said...

Haha, yes! I'll do a Weird Al version of "Poutine & Beer"! It'll be glorious.
