The Lonely Nights Divide You In Two

Every once in awhile I get into conversations about online personalities vs. real-life personalities. Are they the same, or do we project different versions of ourselves on the ol' interwebs?

Online Kris - kinda loud, kinda bitchy

I used to be pretty adamant that I'm the same online as I am in person. And I still stand by that. But I admit, now, that there is a difference between the two.

Aside from my more serious posts, my online personality is pretty much the same as my offline social interactions. I can be loud. I like beer and bad food. I'll do stupid things to get a laugh and not be embarrassed about it. I'm a bit of a dick sometimes. I like debates, sarcasm, and nasty words. And that, more or less, parallels a lot of the unimportant things I post online. That's part of me. 'Bar Kris' is a lot like 'Online Kris'.

But of course there is a whole other side to me, and sometimes people are surprised by it when they actually get to know me. I'm a lot more sensitive and introspective than I appear to be, and I can be very serious. I like intellectual discussion, I love too much, and I'm a huge softie. And I guess that's the difference. I rarely show that online.

Offline Kris - I love my dog, ok?
I'm sure of all of us have met someone we mainly know online and have been disappointed that they weren't quite how we had hoped; the differences online and offline can sometimes be pretty staggering, and sometimes people create a personality they don't possess. But let's be honest - we're all only projecting a small part of ourselves over the internet, and it's the part we allow people to see. It differs from person to person. The older I get, the more I notice the separation.

So what about you? Are you the same online as you are offline?

I'm less of an asshole in person, less sociable, more tentative. Probably just as introspective, just as curious.

I think.

Good question!
I'm more or less the same online and offline. I cuss like a sailor IRL though. It's kinda funny.
I don't really talk about personal stuff on or offline... Just sometimes.

Ps. Love that album.

My core traits are the same but my personality is... bigger... in real life. Fast talking, loud, cracking a lot more jokes, laughing.

From what I know, yup - I'd say you're practically the same!

Same. I've also tried to keep the swearing to a minimum online because my mom doesn't love reading it. Hahaha.
